Crestor (rosuvastatin) is hypolipidemic drug, which is effective to treat hypercholesterolemia.

It is used to reduce high triglycerides levels (hypertriglyceridemia) and different types of cholesterol.

Safety information

Indication

Crestor is used in patients with hypercholesterolemia (type IIa) or familial combined hyperlipidemia (type IIb) along with a proper diet, when diet and other drug-free methods of treatment are insufficient.

Crestor is used in patients with familial homozygous hypercholesterolemia along with a proper diet and other cholesterol-lowering therapy or when such therapy is insufficient.

How to use Crestor

Medication is taken orally. Do not chew or crush the pill. The tablets must be swallowed the whole with sufficient amounts of water. Taking the drug is possible at any time of the day, with or without meal.

Patient should start standard hypercholesterolemia diet before taking rosuvastatin and maintain it during the treatment.

Daily intake dose is determined individually for each patient in dependence on therapeutic goals and therapeutic response on treatment, taking into consideration current recommendations about target lipid profile. Recommended initial dose for patients who just started taking the pills or patients whose treatment was changed from other inhibitors HMG-CoA reductase, should be 5mg (1/2 pills of 10mg) or 10mg of rosuvastatin once per day.

When taken in doses of 1 g/day and above simultaneously with gemfibrozil, fibrates and niacin, recommended initial dose is 5 mg (1/2 pills of 10mg).

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity, evident compromised liver function (creatinine clearance (CrCl) is less than 30mL/min), liver diseases in active phase, myopathy, interaction with cyclosporine pills, lactation, pregnancy, people under the age of 18, women of reproductive age who don’t use reliable contraceptives.

Side effects

• nervous system: headache, asthenic syndrome, dizziness, anxiety, insomnia, depression, paresthesias, neuralgia;
• digestive system: constipation, abdominal pain, nausea, reversible dose-dependent transient increase of activity, liver transaminases, gastritis, dyspepsia, gastroenteritis;
• cardiovascular system: angina pectoris, palpitation, increased blood pressure, vasodilation;
• musculoskeletal system: myalgia, arthralgia, muscle hypertonus, arthritis, back pain, myopathy, pathological limb fracture, rhabdomyolysis;
• urogenital system: tubular proteinuria, peripheral edema, urinary tract infection, abdominal pain;
• laboratory testing: dose-dependent transient increase of creatine phosphokinase activity;
• other: anemia, accidental trauma, chest pain, ecchymosis, diabetes mellitus, periodontal abscess, flu-like syndrome.

•breathing system: strep throat, sinusitis, rhinitis, bronchitis, bronchial asthma, dyspnea, cough, pneumonia;

•allergic reactions: Skin itching, skin rash, angioedema;
